A Delhi University student has alleged that she was not allowed to sit for the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) on Saturday as she was wearing a hijab.
Shabnam (name changed on request) is a student at DU’s Zakir Hussain College and had given her 3rd year exams after which she applied for CUET. Crinkle Chiffon Hijab Factory
The Common University Entrance Test, is an all-India test being organised by National Testing Agency for admission to various Undergraduate, Integrated, Postgraduate, Diploma, Certification courses and Research Programmes in 45 Central Universities across India.
“I had read all the guidelines on the admit card and nowhere was it mentioned that we are not allowed to wear a hijab,” Shabnam told Maktoob.
On Saturday, when Shabnam reached her examination centre, which was Ion Digital Zone iDZ 2 Mathura Road near Sarita Vihar, she was asked by the woman security guard to remove her hijab as a protocol for checking. “I removed the hijab as I understood this was just a protocol. However, after checking she asked me to remove the hijab completely else, I will not be allowed inside,” she said.
Despite reasoning with the guard, she was not allowed to enter after which she could not sit for the exam as the time limit got over.
“As I was not allowed in the centre itself, I could not reach any administration. Nor was there anyone available. More than angry, I am so disappointed this happened,” she averred.
Shabnam said that still reeling with shock, she wanted to file a complaint but her family has suggested otherwise.
“My parents told me to not go overboard and do something that might hamper me. I really want to file a complaint but I can not go against my father and mother as well,” she said, requesting her identity not be revealed.
Shabnam said while it is her right to wear a hijab, there was no instruction ordering the students to not wear hijab. “I was the only one who was not allowed to go in as I was the only hijabi wearing girl there. How is this fair?” the 21-year-old asked.

Meanwhile, several students of Vishwa Bharti Higher Secondary School in the Rainwari area of Srinagar staged a demonstration outside the school against the principal on Thursday for allegedly banning the burqa or abaya (a full loose gown-like covering donned by Muslim women) in the school.
Protesting students alleged that they were barred from entering the school premises for wearing a burqa, following an order by the principal.
“We have been asked to remove the burqa and enter the school premises. When we objected to the order, they told us we must go to a Madrassa instead,” the student said.
However, in an interview with a local news portal, the principal denied all allegations against her. She said that the school has its own dress code which allows white cotton hijab, but only a few girls wear burqas.
“There is no higher authority involved in it. I believe in uniformity which is being followed everywhere, shall be followed here as well,” the principal stated.
